Here is an outline of the various LEVELS OF PLAY for tennis and what you will need to excel at that level or proceed to the next stage of development.

Comprehending - Application - Proficiency detail

This document outlines the three core limits in tennis: Mental, Physical, and Tactical. It explains what each of these components entails and how they work together to elevate match-play performance and overall game development.

BALL CONTACT FUNDAMENTALS & ESTABLISHING BASIC TECHNIQUES LEARNING THE SPORT

Training details:

This level is designed for players who are new to the sport and focused on learning the basics.

 

They will be introduced to the fundamental components of all the primary strokes.

Competition:

BEGINNER FUNDAMENTALS INTRODUCED MOVEMENT/POINT-PLAY INTRODUCED UNDERSTANDING SCORING & BASIC BALL DIRECTIONALS

Training details:

At the Beginner stage, players focus on establishing the fundamental techniques for all strokes while developing consistency and proficiency. This stage introduces hitting across the net in a cooperative manner, along with games that involve basic rallies and directional ball control.

INTERMEDIATE FUNDAMENTALS INTRODUCED
CONSISTENCY AND POINT-PLAY ESTABLISHED
INTRODUCTION TO MATCH-PLAY

Training details:

At this stage, basic fundamentals are solidified and more advanced techniques are introduced. Players begin learning point-play patterns with a strong emphasis on consistency during point execution. Match-play is incorporated, including the introduction of scoring, practice sets, and partial set play to build competitive awareness.

04 COMPETITIVE

ADVANCED TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT

Training details:

At this stage, development shifts to a point-centered focus. Technical and form-related weaknesses are often exposed during point-play and must be addressed immediately. Players begin to understand how point construction and their individual strengths come together to shape their unique style of play. This process requires time, collaborative development with the coach, and consistent refinement to become proficient and adaptable in match-play situations.

USTA, UTR, ALTA, highschool, challenge ladders, practice matches, etc

05 COLLEGE+

COMPETING AT THE NCAA DI, II, III, NAIA OR NJCAA LEVELS
COLLEGE LEVEL TOURNAMENTS, ITF AND USTA PROCIRCUIT

Training details:

Development at this stage takes on a distinctly advanced and individualized nature. The focus shifts primarily to tactical point-play at a high level, mental resilience and awareness, and strategic tournament scheduling aimed at peak performance. Progress in this phase requires an in-depth conversation about the player’s goals, timelines, and the specific path needed to reach them.

At this level, tennis and physical performance must become a consistent part of the athlete’s lifestyle. Because of this, there is no standard number of training hours—everything is customized. Training plans become highly specific and are built entirely around the individual player's needs, objectives, and competitive demands.
